Which country’s national flag contains a purple Sisserou parrot?
Answer
Dominica
Answer
Dominica
Dominica’s national flag contains a purple Sisserou parrot.
The parrot appears at the center of the red disk on Dominica’s flag. The Sisserou parrot, also called the imperial Amazon, is endemic to Dominica and serves as the country’s national bird. Its use gives the flag a direct connection to the island’s wildlife.
Dominica adopted the flag on 3 November 1978. The parrot stands on a twig and faces toward the hoist, with a red neck and green, blue, black and purple plumage. The surrounding 10 green stars represent the island’s parishes.
The Sisserou is critically endangered and has a restricted habitat in Dominica’s mountain forests. It should not be confused with the blue-and-yellow Saint Vincent parrot or with Papua New Guinea’s bird of paradise, both of which appear on other national flags.
