Which country's 2023 census counted 4,993,923 people?
Answer
New Zealand
Answer
New Zealand
New Zealand’s 2023 census counted 4,993,923 people.
The census took place on 7 March 2023 and was conducted by Stats NZ, New Zealand’s official statistics agency. This figure is the usually resident population count: people who normally lived in New Zealand, rather than every visitor present on census day. It was the country’s thirty-fifth national census and followed the previous count in 2018.
The 2023 total was 294,168 higher than the 2018 census figure of 4,699,755, an increase of about 6.3%. Auckland was the most populous territorial area, with about 1.66 million residents, while the West Coast region was the least populous. The census also collected information on ethnicity, Māori descent, age, gender, religion, disability, and housing. Readers sometimes confuse the census count with the estimated resident population: Stats NZ’s estimate for 30 June 2023 was about 5.2 million after adjustments for births, deaths, and migration.
