Which country's 2022 national census counted 61,741,120 people?

Tanzania’s 2022 national census counted 61,741,120 people.

The figure comes from Tanzania’s Population and Housing Census, conducted in August 2022 by the National Bureau of Statistics and Zanzibar’s Office of the Chief Government Statistician. It was the country’s first census carried out digitally, helping speed up the release of results.

The total combines Tanzania Mainland, with 59,851,347 residents, and Zanzibar, with 1,889,773. Women numbered 31,687,990, compared with 30,053,130 men. About 40.2 million people lived in rural areas, while roughly 21.5 million lived in urban areas.

A common mix-up is confusing the census count with later population estimates, which are higher because Tanzania has continued to grow rapidly. The 2012 census counted 44,928,923 people, so the 2022 total represents a major increase over the previous decade. Tanzania is also highly diverse, with more than 100 languages spoken across the country.
