Which country won the men's basketball gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The United States won the men’s basketball gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Games were held in 2021 after a one-year postponement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they retained the official 2020 name.

Team USA defeated France 87–82 in the gold-medal game on August 7, 2021. Kevin Durant led the United States with 29 points and became a three-time Olympic gold medalist. Jayson Tatum added 19 points, while France received 16 points each from Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert.

The victory gave the United States its fourth consecutive Olympic men’s basketball title, following gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016. France earned silver, while Australia defeated Slovenia to take bronze. Australia is therefore a tempting wrong option, but it did not win the final; the Americans overcame Australia in the semifinal before meeting France for the title.
