Which country won the first FIFA World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930?

The story behind the answer

Uruguay won the first FIFA World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930.

The inaugural tournament took place from 13 to 30 July 1930. Uruguay was selected as host partly because it was celebrating the centenary of its first constitution and had recently won Olympic football gold medals in 1924 and 1928.

Thirteen teams entered, and the competition used a group stage followed by semifinals and a final. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the final at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Argentina led 2–1 at halftime, but Uruguay scored three second-half goals.

A common mix-up is confusing the first World Cup winner with the first host. They were the same country in 1930, unlike many later tournaments. Uruguay remains one of the few nations to win the World Cup on home soil.
