Serbia won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with Marija Šerifović’s “Molitva.”
The 2007 contest was held in Helsinki, Finland, after Lordi’s victory for Finland in 2006. Marija Šerifović performed “Molitva,” whose title means “Prayer” in Serbian. The song was Serbia’s first independent entry after Montenegro and Serbia competed separately.
Serbia won with 268 points, ahead of Ukraine and Russia. Šerifović performed the song with backing vocalists known as the Beauty Queens, and the staging emphasized the vocal delivery rather than elaborate props.
The result is historically notable because Serbia won in its first Eurovision appearance as an independent country. Montenegro also entered separately in 2007, but it did not win. Serbia later hosted the contest in Belgrade in 2008.
