Italy won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with Toto Cutugno’s “Insieme: 1992.” Cutugno performed the song at the contest in Zagreb, then part of Yugoslavia, on 5 May 1990.
The entry received 149 points and finished ahead of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Its title, meaning “Together: 1992,” referred to European integration and the planned creation of the European Union. The song’s theme gave the performance a distinctly continental focus rather than a purely romantic one.
Italy’s victory was its second Eurovision win, following Gigliola Cinquetti’s success in 1964. Cutugno later returned as a presenter, co-hosting the 1991 contest in Rome with Gigliola Cinquetti. That edition was staged in Italy because of his 1990 victory.
The 1990 result is sometimes confused with Italy’s later win by Måneskin in 2021. Those victories were separated by 31 years, making Cutugno’s success part of Italy’s earlier Eurovision history.
