Stockholm hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 after Sweden won the previous contest with Måns Zelmerlöw’s “Heroes.”
The 2016 contest took place at the Globe Arena, now known as Avicii Arena, in Stockholm. It was the second time the Swedish capital had hosted Eurovision, following the 1975 contest.
Sweden’s victory in 2015 gave the country the right to stage the next competition. Although Sweden has several major cities, Eurovision 2016 was held in Stockholm rather than Gothenburg or Malmö. The event featured two semi-finals on 10 and 12 May and a grand final on 14 May.
Ukraine won the 2016 final with Jamala’s “1944.” Stockholm later hosted Eurovision again in 2024, when the contest was held at the Malmö Arena in Malmö instead; that contest followed Sweden’s 2023 victory and was not staged in Stockholm.
