Denmark won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963 with Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann’s “Dansevise”.
The contest took place in London on 23 March 1963, after France declined to host because of financial difficulties. Denmark’s winning entry was performed by the husband-and-wife duo Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann, with Jørgen playing guitar during the performance.
“Dansevise” means “Dance Song” in English and was written by Otto Francker, with lyrics by Sejr Volmer-Sørensen. Denmark finished first with 42 points, ahead of the United Kingdom and Italy.
A common mix-up is confusing this result with Denmark’s later victories in 2000 and 2013. The 1963 victory was Denmark’s first Eurovision win and helped establish the country as a recurring competitor in the contest’s early history.
