Luxembourg won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with “Nous les amoureux.”
The song was performed by French singer and actor Jean-Claude Pascal at the contest in Cannes, France. Written by Pierre Delanoë and composed by Raymond Bernard, “Nous les amoureux” translates as “We, the lovers.” Pascal’s performance earned Luxembourg its first Eurovision victory.
The 1961 contest was the sixth Eurovision Song Contest and featured 16 participating countries, then a record number. Luxembourg’s win was especially notable because the country had joined Eurovision in the inaugural 1956 event but had not previously finished first.
The song’s lyrics describe lovers facing social disapproval, although they ultimately look forward to a future in which their relationship can be accepted. Luxembourg later won again in 1965, when France Gall performed “Poupée de cire, poupée de son.”
A common mix-up is confusing the 1961 winner with Luxembourg’s 1965 victory. The two wins were achieved by different performers and different songs.
