Which country won the 1966 FIFA World Cup on home soil?

The story behind the answer

England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

The tournament was held in England from 11 to 30 July 1966, with matches staged at eight venues. England reached the final at Wembley Stadium in London, where it faced West Germany. The match ended 2–2 after 90 minutes, sending the final into extra time.

Geoff Hurst scored twice in extra time, including the famous disputed third goal, and England won 4–2. Hurst remains the only player to score a hat-trick in a men's World Cup final. Captain Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy for England.

England's victory remains its only senior men's FIFA World Cup title. A common mix-up is to confuse the 1966 host with the 1962 host, Chile, or with the 1970 host, Mexico.
