Ireland won Eurovision 1980 with Johnny Logan’s “What’s Another Year.”
The 1980 contest took place in The Hague, Netherlands, on 19 April. Logan performed the ballad written by Shay Healy and finished first with 143 points. Ireland’s victory followed the country’s earlier win in 1970 and became an important early milestone in its later record of Eurovision success.
Johnny Logan was born Seán Patrick Michael Sherrard in Australia and represented Ireland at Eurovision. His 1980 victory is distinct from his later 1987 win as a performer and his songwriting victory in 1992. This is why Logan is associated with several Eurovision records, but “What’s Another Year” specifically belongs to 1980.
The song’s title is a reflective question about waiting for love and time. It is often confused with Logan’s 1987 winning entry, “Hold Me Now,” which was also performed for Ireland.
