Which country supplied the original television format later adapted as the UK's Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

Japan supplied the original television format later adapted as the UK's Dragons' Den.

The UK programme was adapted from the Japanese format Money Tigers, known in Japan as Manē no Tora. The basic concept features entrepreneurs presenting business ideas to wealthy investors who question the proposal and decide whether to offer money in exchange for a stake.

The international format is often described as a business-pitch or investment reality programme. Its central structure travelled successfully because the investor panel, entrepreneur presentation and negotiation can be adapted to local business cultures while retaining the same dramatic premise.

The country of origin is Japan, not the United States or the United Kingdom. The UK series itself is a local adaptation, and the name Dragons' Den refers to the British version and several international versions that adopted related titles. The American adaptation became known as Shark Tank.
