Mexico ranked 10th on Wikipedia’s list of countries by UN-estimated population for 2020, with 126,799,055 people.
The ranking uses United Nations estimates for the year 2020, not a single synchronized worldwide census. In that table, China and India occupied the top two positions, followed by the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, and Russia before Mexico appeared at number 10.
Mexico narrowly ranked ahead of Japan, listed 11th with 126,304,543 people, while Ethiopia was 12th. Russia, one of the wrong-option choices, ranked ninth. Small differences between datasets can occur because population estimates depend on methodology, reference dates, and whether territories or disputed areas are included.
Mexico’s position reflects its large population across a territory spanning North America, from the United States border to Central America. It is also the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country. Mexico City is the country’s largest urban area and one of the largest metropolitan regions in the Americas.
