Which country is the world's most populous Spanish-speaking state?

The story behind the answer

Which country is the world's most populous Spanish-speaking state? Mexico is the answer.

Mexico has more than 130 million inhabitants, placing it well ahead of Colombia, Spain and Argentina. It is also home to the largest population of native Spanish speakers in any single country. Spanish is used nationwide in government, education, media and daily life, although Mexico legally recognizes Spanish alongside numerous Indigenous languages rather than declaring one federal official language.

Mexican Spanish is not a single uniform accent. Regional varieties differ across the capital, northern states, the Gulf coast and the Yucatán Peninsula, with vocabulary and pronunciation shaped by Indigenous languages and local history. Nahuatl and Maya languages, among many others, remain important parts of Mexico's linguistic landscape.

A common mix-up is confusing the number of Spanish speakers with the number of people in Spanish-speaking countries. The United States has a very large Spanish-speaking population, but Spanish is not its national language and its total population is smaller than Mexico's. Spain is the language's European origin point, not its demographic leader.
