Which country is the world’s largest by total land area?

The story behind the answer

Russia is the world’s largest country by total land area.

Its territory covers about 17.1 million square kilometres, extending across Eastern Europe and northern Asia. Russia spans 11 time zones, from the Baltic region to the Pacific coast, and borders 14 countries.

Although Canada is the second-largest country and China and the United States are also enormous, none has as much total area as Russia. Russia’s size includes vast forests, tundra, mountains, grasslands and Arctic islands.

The country’s landmass is so wide that its western and eastern regions can experience very different dates and times. Moscow is in the European part of Russia, while Siberia and the Russian Far East make up much of the country’s Asian territory.
