Which country is the smallest sovereign state located on the island of Borneo?

The story behind the answer

Brunei is the smallest sovereign state located on the island of Borneo.

Brunei covers about 5,765 square kilometres on Borneo's northwestern coast. The rest of the island is divided mainly between Indonesia and Malaysia, and Brunei is separated into two sections by Malaysia's Limbang district.

Brunei is much smaller than either Indonesia or Malaysia, the two other sovereign states with territory on Borneo. Timor-Leste is sometimes mentioned in comparisons of small Southeast Asian countries, but it lies on the island of Timor, not Borneo.

Brunei is an absolute monarchy led by the Sultan. Its economy has long been supported by petroleum and natural gas, and Bandar Seri Begawan is the national capital.
