Which country is the smallest of the four Visegrád Group members by total area?

The story behind the answer

Slovakia is the smallest of the four Visegrád Group members by total area.

Slovakia covers about 49,035 square kilometres. The Visegrád Group also includes the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, all of which have larger territories. The group was established in 1991 to support cooperation among these Central European states.

Slovakia is a landlocked country in the Carpathian region. It borders the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. Bratislava, the capital, is notable for lying close to both Austria and Hungary and near the tripoint region of several Central European countries.

The Czech Republic is sometimes assumed to be the smallest because of its compact shape, but Slovakia has the smaller total area. “Visegrád Four” refers to the same four countries.
