Which country is the smallest in the world by land area with a national football team?

The story behind the answer

Vatican City is the smallest country by land area with a national football team, although its team is not a FIFA member.

Vatican City’s football team represents the sovereign city-state and is organised by the Vatican Amateur Sports Association. It generally plays friendly matches and other non-FIFA games rather than qualifying for the FIFA World Cup or UEFA European Championship.

The team’s players are usually Vatican employees, clergy members, members of the Swiss Guard and other residents or workers connected with the Holy See. The city-state itself occupies about 49 hectares inside Rome and was established by the Lateran Treaty in 1929.

San Marino and Liechtenstein are also famous European microstates with national teams, but both have far larger territories. Vatican City’s unusual eligibility status is why it is commonly discussed separately from FIFA’s international football system.
