Which country is the smallest country bordering Germany by area?

The story behind the answer

Luxembourg is the smallest country that shares a land border with Germany.

The landlocked Grand Duchy covers about 2,586 square kilometres and lies between Germany, Belgium and France. Its eastern border follows the Moselle River in part, while the country’s northern landscape includes the wooded Ardennes region.

Luxembourg has been an independent grand duchy since the nineteenth century and is one of Europe’s major financial centres. Luxembourg City, the capital, is also one of the official seats of several European Union institutions.

Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland all border Germany but are much larger. Luxembourg should not be confused with Liechtenstein, another small European country that borders Austria and Switzerland rather than Germany.
