China is home to the ancient defensive monument known as the Great Wall.
The Great Wall is not one continuous structure built at one time. It is a network of walls, fortifications, trenches, and natural barriers constructed and rebuilt by successive Chinese states and dynasties. Major surviving sections date especially from the Ming dynasty, which ruled from 1368 to 1644.
The wall helped control movement, defend frontier regions, and communicate warnings through watchtowers and signal fires. It stretches across northern China through varied landscapes including mountains, deserts, and grasslands.
A common misconception is that the Great Wall is plainly visible from the Moon; it is not visible to the unaided human eye from lunar distance. Its total length depends on which branches and barriers are counted.
