Which country is home to the ancient city of Tikal?
Answer
Guatemala
Answer
Guatemala
Guatemala is home to the ancient Maya city of Tikal.
Tikal lies in the Petén department of northern Guatemala, within Tikal National Park. It was one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya civilization and reached its greatest influence during the Classic Period, especially between the third and ninth centuries.
The site contains monumental temples, palaces, plazas and causeways surrounded by tropical rainforest. Temple IV rises about 70 metres and is one of the tallest pre-Columbian structures in the Americas.
Tikal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for both its cultural and natural importance. Maya sites in Mexico and Belize are sometimes confused with Tikal, but the city’s archaeological remains are entirely within Guatemala.
