Cambodia is home to the ancient city of Angkor.

Angkor was the capital region of the Khmer Empire, which dominated much of mainland Southeast Asia from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. The archaeological area contains temples, reservoirs, roads, urban settlements, and hydraulic works spread across a large landscape near modern Siem Reap.

Angkor Wat is the best-known monument and was originally built in the early twelfth century under King Suryavarman II. It was dedicated to Vishnu and later became an important Buddhist temple. The wider Angkor complex includes Bayon, famous for its carved faces, and Ta Prohm, whose ruins are intertwined with trees.

Angkor's reservoirs and canals supported agriculture and helped sustain a large urban population. The region's decline resulted from multiple factors, including environmental pressures, political change, and shifts in trade and religious practices. Angkor is not a single temple: it is a vast archaeological landscape containing many monuments and former urban areas.
