Which country is home to most of the Great Wall?

The story behind the answer

China is home to the Great Wall, the world’s most extensive defensive wall system.

Rather than being one uninterrupted wall built at one time, the Great Wall consists of many fortifications constructed, rebuilt, and connected across different periods. Early walls appeared during China’s Warring States period, while the best-preserved sections largely date from the Ming dynasty.

The Ming government strengthened the wall from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries to help defend northern approaches. Bricks and stone were common in important sections near Beijing, while rammed earth and other materials were used elsewhere.

The wall stretches across northern China, but the popular claim that it is visible from the Moon is false. Its total measured length, including trenches and natural barriers, is more than 21,000 kilometres.
