Turkey is the country bordered by both the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Its long northern coast faces the Black Sea, while its southern coast reaches the Mediterranean.
Turkey is unusual geographically because it spans two continents. Most of the country lies in Anatolia, in Asia, while Eastern Thrace occupies a smaller area in southeastern Europe. The Sea of Marmara, together with the Bosporus and Dardanelles, separates these European and Asian portions.
The Aegean Sea also borders Turkey to the west, so the country is often described as being surrounded by seas on three sides. A common mix-up is to name Greece or Bulgaria: both border Turkey and the Black Sea region, but neither has coastlines on both the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Turkey’s position also makes the Turkish Straits a major route between the Black Sea and the wider Mediterranean system.
