Sweden hosted the first Nobel Prize in Literature ceremony.
The inaugural ceremony took place in Stockholm on 10 December 1901, when Sully Prudhomme received the prize. Stockholm remains the venue for the ceremonies for literature, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and economic sciences.
The Nobel Peace Prize follows a different arrangement. Alfred Nobel’s will assigned that prize to a committee elected by Norway’s parliament, so its ceremony is held in Oslo. This division reflects the political union between Sweden and Norway that existed when Nobel wrote his will in 1895.
The Nobel Prize ceremonies are separate from the later Nobel Banquet, traditionally held at Stockholm City Hall. The Literature laureate receives a medal, diploma, and prize money as part of the Stockholm program.
