Which country hosted the 1986 FIFA World Cup after Colombia withdrew?

The story behind the answer

Mexico hosted the 1986 FIFA World Cup after Colombia withdrew as the planned host.

Colombia was originally selected to stage the tournament, but its government later concluded that it could not meet FIFA’s financial and infrastructure requirements. Mexico was chosen in 1983 and became the first country to host the World Cup twice.

The tournament ran from 31 May to 29 June 1986. Argentina won the title by defeating West Germany 3–2 in the final at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca.

Mexico had already hosted the 1970 World Cup. Its second hosting assignment made it a landmark venue in tournament history, decades before later countries received multiple editions.
