Which country hosted the 1958 World Cup?

Sweden hosted the 1958 World Cup. The sixth FIFA World Cup was played across Sweden from 8 to 29 June 1958, with matches staged in 12 cities and venues, including Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Solna.

Sweden was awarded hosting rights unopposed at the FIFA Congress in Rio de Janeiro on 23 June 1950. The tournament was notable for Brazil winning its first World Cup, defeating Sweden 5–2 in the final at Råsunda Stadium in Solna. It also introduced the world to 17-year-old Pelé, who scored in each of Brazil’s three knockout-round matches.

Sweden itself reached the final, defeating defending champions West Germany in the semifinal before losing to Brazil. France’s Just Fontaine scored 13 goals, still the record for the most goals by one player in a single World Cup tournament. The 1958 event remains the only men’s World Cup held in a Nordic country.
