Which country has won the most Ryder Cups?
Answer
United States
Answer
United States
The United States has won the most Ryder Cups, recording more overall team victories than Europe.
The Ryder Cup began as a contest between the United States and Great Britain in 1927. Ireland joined the British side in 1973, and continental Europe was added in 1979. Since then, the event has been contested by the United States and a combined European team, so “United States” is the country-based answer even though its opponent is a multinational side.
The U.S. dominated much of the competition's early history, winning 18 of the first 22 official matches through 1969. Europe became substantially more competitive after its expansion and has often held the upper hand in the modern era, including a run of strong victories in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
A common mix-up is treating Great Britain or Ireland as the current opponent. They were part of the original team structure, but the European team has represented all of Europe since 1979. The Ryder Cup is played every two years, except when extraordinary circumstances cause a postponement.
