Which country has the highest population density among countries with over 10 million people?

The story behind the answer

Bangladesh has the highest population density among countries with more than 10 million people. Its average density is above 1,000 residents per square kilometre, placing it far ahead of large, populous countries such as Japan, Nigeria, and India.

The country’s exceptional density is rooted in geography. Bangladesh occupies most of the fertile Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna delta, where major rivers deposit rich alluvial soil. Flat terrain, abundant water, and a long history of intensive rice cultivation have supported dense settlement for centuries. Dhaka and other cities add large urban concentrations to the rural population.

Bangladesh is not the world’s most densely populated place overall: smaller states and territories, including Monaco and Singapore, rank higher. The phrase “among countries with over 10 million people” removes those tiny city-states and territories from the comparison. It also distinguishes population density from total population; Bangladesh is much smaller in area than India but has a large population packed into that limited space.

Flooding, river erosion, cyclones, and sea-level rise make density a major policy challenge. At the same time, improvements in health, education, and living standards have helped Bangladesh reduce fertility and slow long-term population growth.
