Which country has Cairo as its capital?

The story behind the answer

Which country has Cairo as its capital? Egypt. Cairo is Egypt’s capital and largest city, standing near the Nile Delta in the country’s northeast.

The modern city grew from earlier settlements, especially Fustat, founded after the Arab conquest of Egypt in the 7th century. Cairo itself was established in 969 by the Fatimid dynasty, and it later became a major political, commercial, and intellectual center under Ayyubid and Mamluk rule.

Cairo is often discussed together with Giza and surrounding urban areas as Greater Cairo, one of Africa’s largest metropolitan regions. The Giza pyramid complex is near Cairo, but the pyramids are not in the historic core of the capital itself.

A common mix-up is Alexandria, Egypt’s famous Mediterranean port and second-largest city. Alexandria is historically important, but Cairo is the national capital and the seat of Egypt’s central government.
