Which country finished third at the 1930 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

The United States finished third at the 1930 FIFA World Cup.

The inaugural tournament in Uruguay did not include a separate third-place play-off. The United States is recognized as the third-place team based on its semi-final defeat to Argentina and its stronger overall record than Yugoslavia, the other semi-finalist.

The United States had won all three of its group matches without conceding a goal. It then lost 6–1 to Argentina in the semi-final at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Yugoslavia lost 6–1 to Uruguay in the other semi-final.

Uruguay won the tournament by defeating Argentina 4–2 in the final. Because there was no bronze-medal match, modern summaries sometimes describe the United States as an unofficial or statistical third-place finisher. FIFA's historical records list the team in third position.
