Which country experiences the most tornadoes in the world?

The United States experiences the most tornadoes of any country in the world. It averages roughly 1,200 reported tornadoes per year, far more than any other nation and nearly four times the estimated total for Europe, excluding waterspouts.

This unusual frequency is largely geographic. Moist, warm air flows north from the Gulf of Mexico, while cold air can descend from Canada and dry air moves eastward from the Rocky Mountains. The central United States has few major east–west mountain barriers, allowing these air masses to meet and create the instability and wind shear that severe thunderstorms need.

Many U.S. tornadoes occur in the Great Plains, Midwest, Mississippi Valley, and South. The popular term “Tornado Alley” usually refers to part of the central Plains, but it has no single official boundary, and tornadoes occur across much of the country. Every U.S. state has recorded at least one tornado since systematic records began in 1950.

Canada ranks second in total tornadoes, while Bangladesh is especially notable for deadly tornadoes because of its high population density and vulnerable construction. The country with the most tornadoes is not necessarily the country with the most tornado deaths.
