Which country does Max Verstappen represent in Formula 1?

The story behind the answer

Max Verstappen represents the Netherlands in Formula 1. He races under the Dutch flag because he was born in Hasselt, Belgium, to Dutch father Jos Verstappen and Belgian mother Sophie Kumpen, but he holds Dutch nationality and identifies strongly with the Netherlands.

Verstappen began racing internationally as a Dutch driver and entered Formula 1 with Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2015. His nationality is separate from his birthplace, which is why some fans mistakenly choose Belgium. Austria is also associated with him because Red Bull Racing is based there, while Germany is linked to several historic F1 drivers and teams.

He became Formula 1's youngest race winner at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix after moving to Red Bull Racing. Verstappen later won his first World Drivers' Championship in 2021 and became a multiple champion, further cementing his place as the Netherlands' leading F1 representative.
