Which country does golfer Tiger Woods represent in international competition?

The story behind the answer

Tiger Woods represents the United States in international golf competition. Born Eldrick Tont Woods in Cypress, California, he is an American professional golfer and has competed for U.S. teams in events such as the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

Woods made his Ryder Cup debut in 1997 and was part of the winning United States team in 1999 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He later became one of the most prominent American players in the Presidents Cup, an international team event featuring the United States against an International team made up largely of players from countries outside Europe.

The question can cause confusion because Woods has a diverse family background. His mother, Kultida, was born in Thailand, while his father, Earl, had African American, European, Native American, and Asian ancestry. Woods has discussed this heritage and even coined the term “Cablinasian” to describe parts of it.

Heritage and sporting representation are different issues here: in international golf, Woods competes for the United States.
