The Secret Agent represented Brazil when it won the Motion Picture – Non-English Language award at the 2026 Golden Globes.
Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the political thriller is set in Brazil during the country’s military dictatorship. Its story follows a man returning to Recife in 1977 while trying to evade surveillance and political danger.
The film’s win placed Brazilian cinema at the center of the ceremony’s international-film recognition. Its star Wagner Moura also won Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his performance in the same film.
The award category covers films made primarily outside the English-language tradition. It is different from the Golden Globes’ animated-film category, which went to KPop Demon Hunters, and from the main drama and musical-or-comedy picture awards.
