Which country did Hungary defeat 10–1 at the 1982 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Hungary defeated El Salvador 10–1 at the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

The Group 3 match was played in Elche, Spain, on 15 June 1982. Hungary led 3–0 at half-time and produced the largest winning margin in World Cup history, nine goals. László Kiss scored three times after coming on as a substitute, completing the tournament’s only substitute hat-trick.

Hungary’s other scorers included Tibor Nyilasi, József Tóth, László Fazekas, József Bozsik and Sándor Sallai. Luis Ramírez Díaz scored El Salvador’s goal late in the match.

Despite the extraordinary result, Hungary did not advance from the group. It drew with Belgium and lost to Argentina, while El Salvador’s tournament was also notable for making its World Cup debut. The 10–1 score remains the highest-scoring match in World Cup history.
