Japan created the television format later adapted as the UK's Dragon's Den.
The original programme was called Money Tigers, or Manē no Tora, and was broadcast in Japan. Its basic concept featured entrepreneurs presenting business proposals to wealthy potential investors who decided whether to offer funding.
The format was subsequently adapted in several countries. In the United Kingdom, the programme became Dragon's Den, while the best-known American adaptation uses the title Shark Tank. Different versions change the investors, presenter and production style, but retain the central pitch format.
The Japanese origin is sometimes overlooked because the British and American versions became internationally prominent. Dragon's Den is therefore part of a global television franchise rather than a format created exclusively for British broadcasting.
