Which country borders Denmark on the Jutland Peninsula?

The story behind the answer

Germany is the country that borders Denmark on the Jutland Peninsula.

The Denmark–Germany land boundary runs across the peninsula’s southern end, separating Denmark’s South Jutland from Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein. The modern border is about 68 kilometres long and was established in its present location after the Schleswig plebiscites of 1920, which followed Germany’s defeat in World War I.

This border reflects a complicated history. Schleswig and Holstein were historically linked to the Danish monarchy but had different legal and cultural relationships with Denmark. In 1864, Prussia and Austria took control of Schleswig-Holstein, creating a new international frontier. The 1920 vote moved the boundary southward and broadly followed the linguistic divide between Danish- and German-speaking communities.

A common mix-up is to name Sweden or Norway because both are close to Denmark and have maritime boundaries with it. Poland also lies across the Baltic region, but it does not share a land border with Denmark. Germany is Denmark’s land neighbour on the peninsula itself.
