Which country became the first African team to reach a FIFA World Cup semifinal?

The story behind the answer

Morocco became the first African team to reach a FIFA World Cup semifinal at the 2022 tournament.

Morocco advanced from a group containing Croatia, Belgium and Canada. In the knockout stage, it defeated Spain on penalties in the round of 16 and Portugal 1–0 in the quarter-final. Youssef En-Nesyri scored the winning goal against Portugal.

Morocco’s semifinal appearance surpassed the previous African record of reaching the quarter-finals. Cameroon achieved that stage in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010. No African side had progressed further before Morocco’s run in Qatar.

Morocco eventually lost 2–0 to France in the semifinal and then finished fourth after losing to Croatia in the third-place match. Its success also made Morocco the first Arab nation to reach a World Cup semifinal.
