Lakmé gives Lakmé Fashion Week its name in India.
Lakmé Fashion Week is a major Indian fashion event held in Mumbai. It combines runway presentations by established and emerging designers with commercial partnerships and beauty-industry involvement. The event is associated with Lakmé, an Indian cosmetics brand owned by Hindustan Unilever.
The event was established in 1999 and was originally known as Lakmé India Fashion Week. In 2006, the event was reorganized as Lakmé Fashion Week through a partnership involving Lakmé and IMG. That change helped separate it from other Indian fashion calendars and gave it a stronger international-facing structure.
Lakmé is sometimes confused with the event’s organizer or with a designer label. It is the sponsoring beauty brand whose name forms part of the event title; the shows themselves feature many different designers and brands.
