Which Converse sneaker, first released in 1917, became famous as the company’s classic canvas basketball shoe?

The story behind the answer

The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star was first released in 1917 and became famous as the company’s classic canvas basketball shoe.

Originally called the All Star, the shoe was designed as a basketball sneaker by Converse, which had begun making footwear in 1908. Its high-top canvas construction, rubber toe cap, and diamond-pattern outsole became instantly recognizable.

Basketball player and salesman Chuck Taylor joined Converse in 1921. He promoted the shoe and suggested design improvements, including greater ankle support. His signature was added to the ankle patch in 1932, creating the name Chuck Taylor All-Star.

People sometimes call every Converse canvas high-top a Chuck Taylor, but the brand has also produced other models, including the Jack Purcell and One Star. The All-Star’s long association with music, art, and street fashion helped it become a cultural icon well beyond basketball.
