Which continent is the coldest place on Earth?

The story behind the answer

Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth.

It surrounds the South Pole and is covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, which stores roughly 60 percent of the world’s fresh water as ice. The continent’s high elevation, long polar night, reflective snow and ice, and isolation by the Southern Ocean all contribute to its extreme cold. Antarctica is also the driest continent overall and has the highest average elevation of any continent.

The lowest naturally recorded air temperature on Earth was measured at Vostok Station in Antarctica on 21 July 1983: −89.2°C. Satellite observations have detected even lower surface temperatures in some high Antarctic locations, but the Vostok figure remains the recognized ground-based air-temperature record. Antarctica has no permanent native human population. Scientific stations operated by many countries support research in fields including glaciology, astronomy, climate science, and biology.
