Which console became the best-selling home video-game console in history?

The story behind the answer

The PlayStation 2 became the best-selling home video-game console in history, with more than 155 million units shipped worldwide.

Sony released the PlayStation 2 in Japan in 2000, followed by North American and European launches that same year. The system played games on DVD-based discs and also functioned as a DVD player, helping it benefit from the rapid adoption of the DVD format.

Its library included major series such as Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, and Kingdom Hearts. Sony also supported the console for an unusually long period, with production continuing until 2013.

The Nintendo DS has sold more units than the PlayStation 2 when handheld systems are included, but it is not a home console. The PlayStation 2’s record refers specifically to home video-game consoles.
