Amazon’s market value fell by about $1 trillion in a single year during the 2022 technology sell-off.
Amazon became the first publicly traded company to lose approximately $1 trillion in market value, with the milestone widely reported in November 2022. Its market capitalization had peaked at about $1.88 trillion in July 2021 and fell to roughly $879 billion by November 2022.
The decline occurred amid rising interest rates, inflation, weaker economic expectations, and a broad retreat from high-growth technology stocks. Amazon also faced slower pandemic-era growth and pressure on its retail operations, while its cloud business remained strategically important.
This figure describes lost market value, not a $1 trillion accounting loss or a disappearance of cash. Market capitalization can change rapidly because it is based on the current share price multiplied by shares outstanding.
