Which company, founded in 1987, became the first Asian semiconductor firm to exceed a $1 trillion market cap?

The story behind the answer

TSMC became the first Asian semiconductor firm to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly called TSMC, crossed the $1 trillion valuation level in July 2024 as demand for advanced chips and artificial-intelligence hardware lifted semiconductor shares. TSMC is the world’s leading dedicated semiconductor foundry, manufacturing chips designed by other companies.

The company was founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its business model helped establish the modern foundry industry by allowing customers to design chips without operating their own large fabrication networks.

TSMC is not the same type of company as Nvidia. Nvidia primarily designs processors, while TSMC manufactures chips for customers including Nvidia, Apple, and many other technology companies. Market-cap rankings can therefore place several companies from the same chip supply chain among the world’s most valuable businesses.
