Tesla reached a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021 after a major rally in its shares.
The milestone followed a large order from Hertz for electric vehicles and reflected broader enthusiasm for electric-car adoption. Tesla’s valuation also incorporated expectations about future vehicle production, battery technology, software, charging infrastructure, and energy storage.
Tesla became one of the few companies outside traditional technology to reach the trillion-dollar level. Its market value was unusual compared with established automakers because investors placed a high value on expected future growth rather than only current vehicle sales.
The milestone was temporary in the sense that market capitalization changes every trading day. Tesla’s ranking has moved substantially over time as its share price, production results, competition, and interest rates changed.
