Nvidia’s 2024 market-cap rise was closely linked to demand for graphics processing units used in generative AI.
Nvidia designs graphics processing units, or GPUs, that can perform many calculations in parallel. That capability makes them highly useful for training and operating large artificial-intelligence models, including generative-AI systems that produce text, images, audio, and code.
The company’s data-center business became central to its growth as technology firms invested heavily in AI infrastructure. Nvidia also supplies networking products and software, including the CUDA platform, which allows developers to program its processors.
The market capitalization surge did not mean Nvidia invented generative AI or operated all major AI services. It reflected investors’ valuation of Nvidia’s role as a leading supplier of the hardware and software ecosystem supporting those services. Share-price gains can increase market value even before all expected future profits are realized.
