Tesla became the first automaker valued at $1 trillion during its 2021 stock-market rally.
Tesla’s market value rose dramatically as investors anticipated continued growth in electric vehicles, battery technology, and energy storage. In October 2021, the company’s shares surged after Hertz announced an order for 100,000 Tesla vehicles, although the valuation also reflected broader expectations about Tesla’s future growth.
Tesla was not the first car company to become extremely valuable by revenue or production. Its distinction concerned stock-market capitalization, a measure based on the value investors assign to all outstanding shares.
The milestone was especially notable because established automakers such as Toyota, Volkswagen, and Ford had much larger histories of vehicle production. Tesla’s valuation showed how financial markets can price expected future expansion rather than only present sales or profits.
