Alibaba is a Chinese technology company best known for Taobao, Tmall, and other online commerce platforms. Its marketplace model connected buyers and sellers rather than operating only as a traditional retailer. The IPO drew global attention because it gave international investors a major public-market entry into China’s rapidly expanding internet economy.
Saudi Aramco surpassed Alibaba’s IPO record in 2019. An IPO’s proceeds are money raised by selling newly issued shares and, in some structures, shares sold by existing owners; that amount is different from the company’s later market capitalization.
